Not Against Flesh and Blood

Recently, my heart and mind have been reminded of the truth that we all face each day.  Many of us refuse to see or acknowledge this truth, some of us are ignorant or apathetic to this truth, and some have made the decision to be seduced and to intermingle and accept the darkness that accompanies this truth.

My eyes have been opened to the truth of the unseen in our midst.  Among the unseen is the demonic realm and evil.  If you are not aware that it exists, and are not protected by the saving grace of Jesus, you are leaving many open windows for satan and his evil demons to enter your soul.

For you that do not accept that this realm exists, and maybe are even chuckling to yourself as you read this,  I pray that you take a few moments right now to pray for the Holy Spirit to shine a light on any darkness in your own heart, and that the scales are removed from your eyes.

When you don’t know your enemy, you will be deceived and wounded.  When you don’t understand that  we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places…you will not have the tools necessary to understand and see what is at work in your friends, family, yourself, and the world in general.

It is so obvious to me now.  The Lord is teaching me, and working through me on many levels, as he is with all of you who are sincerely seeking him and loving him through obedience.  Although we all still stumble and fall through sin, we rely on Jesus to help us get back up on our feet, loving us and forgiving us as we ask and accept his forgiveness.  As we align ourselves with him and walk in his ways, we are more and more filled with truth, and we begin to see people, and the world, with a clarity that we did not possess before.

When I see the intense struggles and suffering of so many around me, I am acutely aware that the majority of them, Christians included, are clueless about the real reasons for their misery.  They blame the misery, suffering, and hopelessness on people or circumstances of this world.  They don’t understand and have not truly proclaimed victory through Jesus Christ!  He is the way, the truth and the life.  He is our hope…he is waiting for us to trust in him, and give him all of our sufferings, doubts and pain.  He suffered for us, he already paid the price for our sins. He is the one who we can truly give our lives to and trust his perfect love for us.  He is our protection against the evil spirits around us and is our saving grace.

For those of you who proclaim the name of Jesus, and proclaim your Christianity, I have a few things to ask that you ponder.  And remember, I live in the same world that you do…and are tempted in most of the same ways you are.  Maybe you will be disturbed and defensive by some of what I ask you…however, if something stirs anger or an uncomfortable nudge in your soul, it may be something to pray about, and ask  that the Holy Spirit will reveal any dark areas in your life and heal you from the inside out.

What do you willingly  allow into your heart, and the hearts of your loved ones on a daily basis?   How does your life glorify Jesus?

What movies or TV shows are you watching?  Are you watching intense violence and gore, stories about promiscuity/sexual sin that include nudity?  Are you watching shows that glorify a “new” kind of family…a family that stands for many things against that of a true godly family?  Do you find yourself laughing it off as “just a movie”, or making excuses, that God doesn’t care about a movie or show you are watching?  Are you one of the Christians who supported, watched and enjoy entertainment such as “Fifty Shades of Grey?”

Are you supportive of a woman’s “right to choose?”  Do you really believe that The Holy Spirit is responsible for mutilating and killing babies in the womb, and filling the soul of the mother and all those that are assisting in this horror with darkness and pain?  What spirit do you believe is filling and numbing minds to this evil that is occurring as commonplace in our world?

What music are you listening to?  Do you really believe that the music you fill your whole being with, is leading you closer to Jesus (love) or is glorifying your Father in Heaven?

Have you read any books lately that bring you closer to Jesus and help you on your walk with him?  Are you reading about your faith, and everything that your faith or denomination stand for?  Are you reading The Word of God…the Bible?  Or are you reading something else entirely…

Do you dabble with evil…the occult, astrology, mediums, the paranormal, transcendental meditation?

Do you find your joy in overindulging yourself with food, alcohol, drugs or sex?

Are you living in sexual sin…married or unmarried?  Do you allow pornography in front of your eyes?

Are you constantly comparing your life to others?  Why can’t you have more material things, more beauty, more success…never understanding that God has blessed you uniquely, according to his purpose in your life?

Do you allow the evil in the world to take away your joy?  Are you  allowing it to penetrate your heart with hate, fear or apathy?

Do you forgive those who have hurt you deeply, whether it be physical, emotional or spiritual?

Are you discerning of the ones you associate with?  Do you look for the fruits of the spirit in their life?  Not just personality, but true integrity of heart?

Do you believe that your purpose on earth is to just “be happy?”  Is your personal happiness the focal point of your day to day life?

Do you engage with those living in darkness by sharing the light of Christ or by encouraging or condoning their confusion and error due to “political correctness?”

Are you trapped in pride, arrogance or bitterness?

Many things to think about in our day to day decisions.  Which decisions bring us closer to Jesus, which ones glorify our Father?  Which ones open windows to satan and his evil demons, allowing them to slowly fill our hearts with darkness and despair?  Satan is THE DECEIVER and will twist truth to confuse us…if we don’t know and accept this  truth we will not be able to discern spirits and will not know how to arm ourselves against such evil.

Jesus is love.  Jesus dispels darkness, for he is The Light.    Jesus heals.   Jesus is victorious.  Jesus is our power.   Through Him we are saved.  Through His Word we are protected.

I pray that  the Holy Spirit opens your heart and fills you with His peace, love, and joy.  I pray that you are filled with a new understanding of the depth that you are loved by Jesus, and that you are made aware of  the importance of staying close to Him that loves you, carrying your daily cross in union with Him.  I also pray that your heart and soul be protected against the evil one, and that you hide yourself in the love of your Lord.

11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

19 And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel,

20 For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.  Ephesians 6:11-20

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”  John 14:6

13For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.14And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.15Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.  2 Corinthians 11:13-15

    • So true…each of us has that choice to make…to accept Jesus who is perfect love, or to reject Him to try to save ourselves or to live as we please. Or worse yet, willingly, in rebellion, accept satan’s lies and deceit.

Please keep me in your prayers, as I will do for you:-)

      Love and blessings in Christ,

  2. Excellent!
I have often written on the same. . . when I was still in the classroom, working with teenagers–I would hammer the same sort of mantra– – -“what are you watching, what are you listening to, what are you taking into your psyche, your soul, your very being?? Are you opening a back door to evil? Is what you consume through your ears, eyes, nose, mouth edifying or destructive?. . .
I think so many “christians” consider “entertainment” to be “over there”— meaning it is separate from themselves, who they are and what they believe—-that as they themselves are “over here” and all that business is “over there”, it certainly won’t mess with their lives over here—but what they don’t grasp is that they are carrying back with them the vile undoings from over there, back over to here and here is certainly no place for any of that. . .
    a great honest post!!!
    Thank you—Julie

    • Julie…you are so right. So many Christians separate “Jesus” from their day to day life. They (us) consider many things to be “over there.” Almost like, I SAID I was a Christian, you don’t expect my life to be any different from other people…they may think I am a weird “religious” person. That is a trap from the deceiver.

It is very transparent to see, whether or not the fruits of the spirit are evident in lives. When those holy fruits are not evident, much prayer is needed:-)

      Thank you for thoughtful comment!

  3. Thank you for sharing this. It is so often that I (and many other Christians) are put down for these “archaic” beliefs. I have even been ridiculed by other Christians for having thoughts alike to what you have expressed here. Thank you for the reminder, the encouragement, and the boldness you have in speaking God’s truth!
    God Bless You!

    • What a blessing to be put down and ridiculed for wanting to follow Jesus and be close to him. It is expected from non-Christians, and frustrating and sad when coming from Christians. We must pray unceasingly for the Holy Spirit to open eyes and hearts.

Thank you for standing firm on The Truth. May God bless you, too!

  4. Bernadette,
I really admire and appreciate the boldness of your post. The Lord has really been impressing the same type of thing on my husband and me and we have practically quit watching television and spend lots of time in the quietness of our family time together. It is not a fear of sin, but rather, the lack of desire to be around or partake in it – sin destroys lives. It destroys from the inside out. It weakens our barriers to a place where we sustain less and less a meaningful and purposeful walk; we no longer know where our “lines” are, much less can anyone else discern what it is that we stand for. It is not a staunch view that we should seek to possess to scare sinners away, but a secure and stable position we should strive to achieve in order that we can serve as vessels of peace and resources of wisdom and strength for those who are lost. I pray that just as it is doing in our home, the Holy Spirit will sweep the nation in a radical move of faith and boldness and that the army of Christ will rise up and take its place in this present darkness. It surpasses fear, it exceeds anything that we can obtain or pursue. Whether a believer or not, Satan seeks to infiltrate and destroy lives just the same. To attempt to fight and win a spiritual battle by engaging in a carnal fight is to beat the air. Great words!

    • Tina,

Thanks for sharing such thoughtful words. Like you, the Holy Spirit has led me away from most TV. I honestly lost the desire. The other area I have been healed of is the “paranormal.” Because of my gift of being able to feel and discern spirits, I was going down a dark road. I was dabbling and reading information that was not of God. I was confused and did not understand what I was supposed to be doing with my “abilities” and erroneously thought I needed to delve deeper to learn the truth and find my “power.” That delving almost lead to mediums and tarot cards.

The Lord kept me in His care. Even though I was seeking darkness instead of light (in error), I always prayed and asked Jesus to keep me in his care. Through one comment from my son (which was “I wonder what Father Jeb would think of all this), I was led to a meeting with my priest, who listened to my whole story, and then prayed over me. I felt a darkness lift out of me that day that I had never experienced before.

From that day on, I had no desire at all for anything “paranormal”. Two years ago, I would read and watch anything having to do with ghosts, demons, ufos, mediums, the paranormal. I was obsessed. That desire has never returned. I still read Catholic books about saints, and about the spiritual world and the battles in the unseen. However, I now know to keep close to Jesus, and the Holy Spirit will guide me and teach me according to His purpose.

Not sure why I shared all this…it just came out:-)

You and your family continue to be in my prayers. Less TV and NOISE and more quiet family times is an awesome way to get closer to God and also our families and friends. As you, I also believe more and more Christian warriors are being raised. This is the time.

Lots of love to you and your family,
      Bernadette

  5. Dear Bernadette, Excellent post !! I have started a book (if I ever get back to it) titled God’s Armor or Satan’s Chains” I absolutely understand all 6 pieces of God’s spiritual armor…and after spending much time in the Word, I have successfully put on all 6 pieces… Praise for the truth in His Word… (Ephesians 6:11…&…James 4:7-8)

To this day, Satan (for the most part) doesn’t penetrate my armor, when I put on the Lord Jesus Christ each and every morning !! (Romans 13:14)

But I am led to share my personal testimony, in hope of helping anyone who has been filled with the Holy Spirit…but has somehow lost their God given peace and joy, that walking with the Lord (Galatians 5:16) will provide… I have copied and pasted my testimoney, because I share it so often…

All Christians can backslide, if they are not living for the Lord… I did for 7 years and 2 days after I was saved at the age of 54 (Praise the Lord for His longsuffering of my life). My peace and my joy I once had were gone, after I somehow took back control from the Holy Spirit… I believe it was after listening to CH.Spurgeon’s preaching on “Grieving the Holy Spirit”, that I finally got down on my knees and prayed to the Lord that I wanted to start living for Him again…

My God given peace and a joy that only living for Christ will bring into your life (John 15:11…&…Colossians 1:11), flooded back into my heart, mind and soul… The Holy Spirit was sitting back waiting for me to give Him back the control of my life…

It is a combination of wearing God’s WHOLE set of spiritual armor (Ephesians 6:10-20), and total submission to the Lord (James 4:7-8) that will keep the Christian who keeps a short leash on committed sins by praying 1 John 1:9, EVERY time they find themselves sinning…

Walking with the Lord as a Spirit filled Christian (Ephesians 5:18-20) is sweet fellowship that will be broken by unconfessed sin. We must listen and understand what the writer of Hebrews 12:4-11 tells us about God’s discipline…and hopefully regain the peaceable fruit of righteousness that will be obtained by those trained by God’s chastising…

Hebrews 4:11… Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. (NKJV)

Hope this helps someone who has fear, or anxiety, or doubts about their salvation, as Satan will use his bag of tricks to pull the Christian down. The power of the Holy Spirit will quench Satan’s attempts every time we step back and allow Him to take TOTAL charge of our lives !!

The Apostle John tells us this, in…1 John 4:18… There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. (NKJV) Torment comes from Satan…and The Lord’s perfect love “casts out fear” as we allow His power to fight our battles…

May these words bring praise and glory to the King of kings and the Lord of lords !!

    Blessings in Christ, bruce

  7. Great post, Bernadette. I do not think we think enough of how we allow evil in our lives, through these things. It only takes a small crack in the window of our hearts, and the more we do what you have mentioned, the wider that crack becomes. If we are not careful eventually that window is wide open, and there we sit.

“He prowls through the earth seeking the ruin of souls.” Without the protection of God’s armor, we are sunk.

I have heard so many say, “Devil give me your best shot, I am a child of God.” When they say this, I cringe!!!!!!!! We have only to look at Job, the Cross, and the world today to see what his best shot is. Satan is a worthy adversary and we need to remember this. We are children of God, but when Satan fills us with so much pride that we think we can outdo him, we are in trouble. Enjoyed reading and God Bless, SR

  8. You nailed it and I agree! We are extremely careful about what we watch on television to the point we watch very little since there are few shows that actually have no sexual overtones. I spend my time writing and my husband spends his time studying The Word. The one show we both enjoy as entertainment is Dancing With The Stars–primarily because I once had a future as a dancer, but it passed. No regrets though, I just enjoy watching others.

  9. There are not many shows on TV to pick from. However, there are a few good ones.

My husband and I just watched an old movie “The Robe.” It was excellent and a beautiful story of redemption…gave me lots to think about.
